Looking for a Crystal Knows Alternative? An Honest Comparison

Crystal (crystalknows.com) and Depth Profile both sell personality insight, but they answer different questions. Crystal is mostly about the people you work with: what a prospect or teammate is likely to be like, and how to talk to them. Depth Profile is about you: a long written report built from your own answers.

This page sets out what each one does, what each costs, where Crystal is the better choice, and where it is not. Crystal details come from its own pricing and accuracy pages, read on October 27, 2026.

What Crystal offers

Crystal’s best-known feature is prediction. Its accuracy page says profiles are predicted by its “Personality AI” from text in a person’s social media profile, resume and similar material. Its Chrome extension shows a predicted personality on LinkedIn profiles, and its business products add meeting briefs and buyer profiles for sales teams. The Personality API, per the pricing page, returns a DISC type, an archetype and traits.

Crystal also has a self-assessment side. Its pricing page lists a free plan that includes every assessment and result, naming its DISC test along with Enneagram, 16 Types, Big Five, Character Strengths, Core Values and others.

When we read the pricing page on October 27, 2026, it listed:

  • Free, $0. All assessments and results, one free guide and one free analysis of each kind, up to 10 contacts, and up to 10 LinkedIn predictions.
  • Crystal Premium, $49 a month or $490 a year. Full personality, career and goal advice, meeting briefings, goal planning, unlimited LinkedIn predictions and the Chrome extension.
  • Premium Team, $49 per seat per month. Member profiles are shared with the team by default.
  • Team Assessments, billed annually. $500 for 10 participants, $1,500 for 60, $5,000 for 240.
  • Buyer Profiles at custom pricing, and a pay-per-use API.

On Crystal’s accuracy figures

Crystal’s accuracy page says its predictions are “typically 80% accurate” and its tests “on average 97% accurate”. The page does not explain how those figures were measured, and we have not seen independent tests of them, so treat them as the company’s own claims. Predicting personality from someone’s public writing is a real research area, but it is a different thing from that person answering questions about themselves.

What Depth Profile offers

Depth Profile starts with a free assessment you take yourself: about 80 questions covering the Big Five, an MBTI-style type, creativity style and introversion. Built on the public-domain IPIP item pool for the Big Five, with attachment items adapted from the ECR-R and career items from Holland's RIASEC model. Free add-ons cover relationships (attachment and conflict style), career (RIASEC interests and career anchors), the Enneagram and communication style, which includes a DISC profile.

The free result gives you your Big Five scores and an archetype. The Full Depth Report, $19 once, adds:

  • A long-form portrait written by AI from your scores and answers, not from a type template
  • A written facet reading for each trait (descriptive, not facet scores)
  • Attachment and career chapters, if you took those free add-ons (before or after buying)
  • A 30-day growth plan built around three experiments
  • 50 AI prompts for ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, built from your scores
  • Four bonus deep-dive assessments, PDF export and a 30-day money-back guarantee

Before paying, you can read the sample report, which shows the main sections and a few of the 50 prompts for an invented profile. These are our own short forms. They are not independently validated, and this is a self-reflection tool, not a clinical one.

Where Crystal is the better choice

  • You sell for a living and want a read on prospects. Depth Profile cannot tell you anything about someone who has not taken the assessment. Crystal’s whole design is built around that use.
  • Your team already speaks DISC. If your workplace uses DISC language, Crystal fits it directly. Our DISC profile lives in a free add-on, not in the main report.
  • You want ongoing coaching inside an app. Crystal Premium includes goal planning and meeting briefings, billed at $49 a month or $490 a year. Our report is a document you keep, not a running service.
  • You run assessments for a large group. Crystal sells team plans at $49 per seat per month and annual assessment packages from $500 to $5,000. Our Coach Pack is five credits at a time.

Where Depth Profile is the better choice

  • You want to understand yourself, not other people. A self-report assessment with a long written portrait is a different product from a prediction tool, and it is the one we make.
  • You would rather pay once. Crystal’s full advice sits behind a subscription. Our full report is $19, one time, and you keep the PDF.
  • You want a trait model rather than a four-style model. DISC sorts behaviour into four styles. The Big Five measures five traits on continuous scales and has a much larger research base. Our guide to trait and type models explains the trade-off.
  • You want relationships and career in the same report. The attachment and career chapters are read alongside your Big Five, so the report can explain why you behave one way at work and another at home.
  • You do not want to be profiled without asking. Every Depth Profile result comes from answers the person chose to give.

Predicting a stranger’s personality from their public writing raises questions worth thinking about before you rely on it. The person has not agreed to be assessed, cannot see or correct the result, and may have written their LinkedIn summary for a very different audience. Even an accurate prediction captures how someone presents in public text, not necessarily how they behave in a meeting with you.

None of that makes prediction useless. It does mean it works best as a first guess you hold loosely and replace with what you learn in conversation. For people you work with closely, such as a team, a coaching client or a partner, an assessment they take themselves gives a better starting point and a better conversation. The guide for coaches covers how to run that well.

If you were looking at Crystal for a small team

Some people find Crystal while looking for a way to help a small team or a set of coaching clients understand each other. If that is you, compare the Coach Pack: $99 for 5 full report credits, sent as one private invite link. Each person takes the free assessment and gets their own full report, and everyone who opts in appears in a shared summary with archetypes, Big Five scores and group averages. Credits do not expire, and you can use one on yourself. The Coach Pack page has the details.

It is not a sales tool and it will not replace annual team programmes for large organisations. For a group of five people who want to talk about how they work, it is often enough.

The practical answer

If your goal is selling or prospecting, Crystal is built for that and we are not. If your goal is a clear, written account of your own personality that you can act on, take our free assessment, look at your scores, and read the sample report before deciding whether the $19 report is worth it. Full details are on the pricing page. Both free tiers cost nothing, so trying both is a reasonable way to decide.

See your own scores first

about 80 questions, 10 to 15 minutes. Your Big Five scores and archetype are free. Decide on the full report after.
