Giving a Personality Test as a Gift: How to Do It Well

A personality report can be one of the more thoughtful gifts you give: something about the person, not just for them. It can also land badly, as a hint that they need fixing. The difference is almost entirely in who you give it to and how.

This guide covers who it suits, who it does not, how to give one well, and the practical ways to pay for someone else’s Depth Profile report.

Who a personality report suits as a gift

  • The friend who already knows their Enneagram number. If someone brings up their type in conversation, a detailed report is a gift they will actually read.
  • A partner, as something to do together. Both of you take it, then compare over dinner. The free partner comparison shows where your Big Five scores line up and where they differ.
  • Someone at a crossroads. A recent graduate, a friend thinking about a career change, someone just back from leave. The career chapter, with five job titles that fit their profile, gives them something concrete to react to.
  • A small team or family. A shared vocabulary for how people differ can take the heat out of recurring friction, as long as everyone opts in.
  • Coaching clients. Coaches often give an assessment as part of onboarding. The guide for coaches covers how to debrief one.

Who it does not suit

  • Someone going through a hard time. A report that names blind spots is not what a person in crisis needs. Give them your time instead.
  • Someone you are in conflict with. Handed over mid-argument, a personality test says “I think the problem is you.”
  • People who dislike tests. Some people find self-assessment tedious or intrusive. That is a legitimate preference, not something to fix.
  • Anyone under 16. Depth Profile is intended for people 16 and older.

How to give it well

Take it yourself too

The single best way to keep a personality test from feeling like a judgment is to take it alongside the person. It turns “here is something about you” into “let’s compare.” A Coach Pack credit can go on yourself; with a single gift, buy your own report separately.

Say plainly that it is private

People answer more honestly when they know nobody else will see their answers. Tell them their report is theirs, and that you will only see what they choose to share.

Have no agenda

If you are hoping the report will finally show your partner they are avoidant, do not give it. The gift works when you are curious about what it says, not when you already know what you want it to say.

Pair it with a conversation

A report read alone is interesting. A report talked through with someone who knows you is useful. Pick one or two sections to discuss, such as the attachment chapter or the 30-day plan. The couples guide has questions that work for partners and close friends.

The Coach Pack

The Coach Pack is how you pay for other people’s reports. One payment of $99 gives you a private invite link worth 5 Full Depth Reports. Each person who opens it takes the free assessment and unlocks their full report at no charge to them. Credits do not expire, and you can use one on yourself.

People who opt in appear on a shareable summary with their archetype and Big Five scores, plus group averages, which is handy for a family or team conversation. To be straight about the price: $99 for 5 works out to $19.80 per report, slightly more than buying 5 separately at $19 each ($95 in all). You pay the difference for the single link and the group summary, not a bulk discount. Full details are on the Coach Pack page.

For one person

Gift a Full Depth Report costs $19, the same as the report itself. You get one private gift link to send yourself, by text, email or in a card. They take the free assessment, and when they unlock their full report the gift brings it to $0. Their report is private to them. The link does not expire, and an unused gift can be refunded within 30 days of purchase.

Lower key options: send the free assessment and let them decide, or, if you already have your own report, share your result link: friends who open it get $5 off, so the report costs them $14 instead of $19.

What the recipient experiences

  1. They open the link and take the free core assessment: about 80 questions, 10 to 15 minutes.
  2. They can add the free attachment and career assessments, which feed the relationship and work chapters.
  3. Their Full Depth Report unlocks: a long-form portrait, a written facet reading for each of the five traits (descriptive, not facet scores), attachment and career chapters, a 30-day growth plan, 50 AI prompts for ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, and four bonus deep-dive assessments.
  4. They can export it as a PDF to keep or print.

What it is and is not

It is a detailed portrait for self-reflection and conversation, built on open research instruments. It is not a clinical assessment and not a hiring tool, and our short forms have not been independently validated. That is worth knowing before you give it, so you can frame it the same way.

Before you buy

Take the free assessment yourself first. It takes 10 to 15 minutes, and you will know whether the questions and the results feel like something your friend or partner would enjoy. Then read the sample report, check the pricing page, and decide whether a single gift, the Coach Pack or a simple link to the free test is the better gift.

Give the report, keep it private

$19 covers one person’s full report. Send them the link; they take the free assessment and unlock their own private report. For a group, the Coach Pack covers 5 for $99.

Frequently asked questions

Can I buy a single personality report as a gift?

Yes. Gift a Full Depth Report costs $19. You get one private gift link. They take the free assessment, and when they unlock their full report the gift covers it. We don’t email the link for you: you send it yourself, however you like, with your own note. Giving to 2 or more people? The Coach Pack covers 5 reports for $99.

Can I use it myself?

Yes, but then the gift is used. Opening the link does not use it. It is used the moment someone unlocks a report with it, so don’t unlock a report with your own gift link unless you mean to.

Does the gift expire?

No. The gift link has no expiry date.

Will I be able to see their results?

Only what they choose to share. Each person gets their own private report. With the Coach Pack, people who opt in appear on a group summary with their first name, archetype and five trait scores, and they can remove themselves from the device they joined on, or by emailing hello@depthprofile.com.

Do Coach Pack credits expire?

No. Each checkout through your invite link uses one credit until all are used, so you can give reports over months. You can also use a credit on yourself.

Is a personality report a good gift for a partner?

It can be, if you take it together and treat it as something to talk about rather than a verdict. It is a poor gift in the middle of a conflict, where it can read as “here is what is wrong with you.”

What if the gift goes unused?

If the gift hasn’t been used, email hello@depthprofile.com within 30 days of purchase for a full refund. We deactivate the link when we refund. Unused Coach Packs are covered the same way.

Is there a minimum age?

Yes. Depth Profile is intended for people 16 and older, so it is not a suitable gift for younger teens.
